For a bit of fun I thought I would have ago at putting together a Spotify playlist featuring some of the funniest comedy songs weirdest novelty hits and most comical instrumentals. Make sure to follow the playlist to stay up to date as I hope to add more songs as I find some more good ones!
Out of these songs I chose my 10 favourite ones to feature here. Some you might know and some you probably don’t. These are in no particular order and are my own picks so if one of your favourites has missed out I’d love to know your faves!
1. Headbutts – John Otway with Wild Willy Barrett
A comedy song best seen as well as heard. How on earth John was able to keep smashing his head against the microphone without forgetting the words is pretty spectacular. No need for high end theatrics, lights, or dancers, a man head butting a mic is entertainment enough for me.
2. I Am A Cider Drinker – The Wurzels
Being from Devon this song is taught to all kids as soon as they say their first words. Its even become an anthem for West country football clubs. The Wurzels are royalty in the westcountry and this song about the westcountry’s favourite drink helps their cause too.
3. Midweek – John Shuttleworth
John Shuttleworth has made a career on radio and comedy songs and in my eyes none are better than Midweek. A funny song all about the mundanity of life which fits in so well with the character. A great line in the song is “Get two for one deals at the carvery.” Any song that mentions a carvery is up there for me.
4. Lunchtime Lover – Brett Domino
Brett Domino has been a great artist to enjoy over the last year. His funky tunes have provided me with some great laughs. This song is all about how he can only afford to take his girlfriend on a picnic with a meal deal. Trust me, if you have a few hours spare it is well worth checking out Brett’s Youtube channel for more great songs as well as great dead pan comedy with his pal Steven Peavis.
5. Auf Widersehen Mate – Goldie Lookin Chain
Whatever your opinion on Brexit, this song is sure to put a wry smile on your face. Who would have thought a breakup song could be written about the UK and EU? Goldie Lookin Chain did, and its definitely one good result of the referendum.
6. Mouldy Old Dough – Lieutenant Pigeon
A mainly instrumental song, Mouldy Old Dough, still crack me up. The honky tonk piano and piccolo? leads beautifully into an old gruff voice saying the words “Moudly Old Dough.” Even the writer of the song doesn’t get the meaning. The British public seemed to understand the song as it went to the dizzying heights of #1 in the charts.
7. Life’s Been Good – Joe Walsh
Joe Walsh best known as the singer and guitarist of the rock band the Eagles, has our number 7 entry on this list. Although a much more serious musician than most on this list, as well as the most successful, Joe Walsh wasn’t afraid of adding a bit of humour to his songs. Life’s Been Good is a perfect satirical look at his career and the lifestyle of a rock star.
8. Took Problem Chimp to the Ideal Home Show – Half Man Half Biscuit
This song has really made me chuckle during the recent lockdowns. The way Half Man Half Biscuit can create such a great tune and have such hilarious lyrics to go with it is just sheer genius. I liked this song so much that it appeared in my top 5 on Spotify this year. If this song don’t leave you with a smile on your face, nothing will.
9. Spanish Flea – Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass
Spanish Flea often appears on those Youtube videos with names like “famous songs you don’t know the name of.” It’s such a recognisable tune mainly used in the background of tv shows. If this ditty is playing you know something funny is about to happen.
10. Ernie – Benny Hill
We couldn’t have a top ten of comedy songs without featuring something from Benny Hill. His most famous and most popular song was all about Ernie, the Fastest Milkman in the West. Chosen by David Cameron on his Desert Island Discs (make of that what you will), the song got Christmas number one in 1971. Not bad for old Ernie.
